Mental Sprints

Work your brain like an athlete works the body.

Dec 29, 2020

High intensity, shorter duration.

An athlete trains hard for a short period of time. As an example, sprinting for short bursts, burns calories quicker, and builds more explosive strength, than doing extended long-form cardio. It’s the reason HIIT training (High Intensity Interval Training) is so popular.

That said, your mind is a muscle and functions in a similar way. You’ll be much more effective and productive, if you work hard during shorter periods of time, conducting high-impact activities that will yield the the greatest outcomes. As opposed to slowly drudging through menial tasks all day that are low impact.

What should you work on?

How do you decide what is high-impact or not? Deep Work by Cal Newport and The One Thing by Gary Keller are essential reading on the topic. But a popular method is the 80/20 Principle, a.k.a the Pareto Principle. It’s applied in all aspects of business and life in general. But with task management, it basically states that 80% of all of your success and outcomes come from 20% of what you actually do all day. The rest is basically a waste of time. So look at what you need to do, or want to do, and prioritize based on the 80/20 rule, and then go execute with a hard-hitting mental sprint.
